When do you use the one-card vs two-card number?

Use the two-card ("by river") number only when no more betting can happen — facing an all-in on the flop. In a normal hand, use the one-card number: you're paying today's price for today's card, and if you miss the turn you'll face a new bet at a new price. Using 36% for a flush draw against a flop bet — then calling the turn too — is double-counting your equity, and it's one of the most expensive habits in low-stakes poker. Pair this chart with the pot odds calculator to see whether the price ever justifies the chase.

Outs & odds FAQ

What are outs in poker?

Outs are the unseen cards that improve your hand to a likely winner. Holding four hearts on the flop, any of the 9 remaining hearts completes your flush — 9 outs. Counting outs turns 'I have a draw' into a number you can compare against pot odds.

What is the rule of 2 and 4?

A table-speed shortcut: multiply your outs by 4 for your chance of hitting by the river with two cards to come (on the flop, facing an all-in), or by 2 with one card to come. 9 outs ≈ 36% by the river, 18% per card. It runs slightly high above ~10 outs but is accurate enough for real-time decisions.

What are the odds of hitting a flush draw?

With 9 outs after the flop: about 19.1% on the turn, 19.6% on the river, and 35% by the river with both cards to come. That's roughly 1.9-to-1 against with two cards, or about 4.2-to-1 against per individual card.

How do you count outs correctly?

Count only cards that make your hand best, and discount tainted outs. An open-ender plus flush draw isn't 8 + 9 = 17 — two of the straight cards also complete the flush and are counted once (15 outs). If a flush card would also complete an opponent's likely bigger flush or pair the board dangerously, discount it. Overcounting outs is the most common way players talk themselves into bad calls.

How many outs does an open-ended straight draw have?

Eight — four cards on each end. That's about 31.5% by the river with two cards to come, or 17% per card. A gutshot has half that: 4 outs, roughly 16.5% by the river.
