What is fold equity in poker?
Fold equity is the value a bet gains from the chance the opponent folds. A bluff with no showdown value relies entirely on it; a semi-bluff with a draw combines it with the equity from hitting. If the opponent will never fold, there is no fold equity and bluffing is pointless.
Why it matters
Every aggressive action is priced by two things: how often it wins immediately (fold equity) and what happens when it doesn't (your hand's equity). A flush draw that bets the flop wins the pot outright sometimes and still has 35% when called — that combination is why semi-bluffs are so strong.
Fold equity depends on the opponent and the story. A calling station gives you almost none; a tight player facing a credible line gives you a lot. Bluff frequency should follow it.

Common questions
How do you calculate fold equity?
For a pure bluff, break-even fold frequency = bet ÷ (pot + bet). A half-pot bluff needs a third of folds; a pot-size bluff needs half. Add the equity when called for a semi-bluff and the required fold frequency drops.
Who should you not bluff?
Players who don't fold — calling stations — and players whose range is uncapped on the current board. Bluff the ones who can fold and have something to fold.
