What is a donk bet in poker?
A donk bet is a bet into the previous street's aggressor by the player who called — for example, the big blind calling a raise preflop and then betting the flop before the raiser can c-bet. It's named for the "donkey" play it usually is, though there are boards where it's correct.
Why it matters
On most flops the preflop raiser has the range advantage, so leading into them with a medium hand just builds a pot you're behind in and denies yourself the chance to check-raise. That's why solvers rarely donk bet.
The exceptions are boards that favor the caller's range — low, connected flops like 6-5-4 where the big blind has all the two-pairs and straights and the raiser has overcards. There, a small lead can be correct.

Is a donk bet ever correct?
Yes, on boards that hit the caller's range harder than the raiser's — typically low, connected, or paired flops when the caller is the big blind. Even then it's a small bet with a specific part of the range, not a default.
Why is it called a donk bet?
From "donkey", poker slang for a weak player. Leading into the raiser was a hallmark of players who didn't understand who had the range advantage.
