Your hand: K♠ Q♦, in the big blind. You have top pair, good kicker — but the river just completed a lot of straights and the board is now wet and dangerous. You're ahead of plenty of hands, behind some, and your opponent checks to you. You can bet for thin value, but sizing matters a lot here.

Why

- Check — or bet tiny (up to 10% of the pot) — Pot control on a board this wet is defensible — you have a thin-value hand, not a monster. But checking gives up value from the many worse pairs and busted draws that would call a small bet. A thin value bet here makes money more often than it costs you.
- ✓ Bet 11–55% of the pot — Right idea — a smaller bet that gets called by worse pairs while folding out the hands that beat you. Clean. On a scary, straight-completing river, a modest size is exactly how you milk thin value without paying off the hands that got there.
- Bet 56–90% of the pot — You're going for value — fine in spirit. But betting big on a board where so many straights got there mostly gets called by the hands that beat you and folds out the worse ones. A thinner size prints; this one bleeds.
- Overbet — more than 90% of the pot — Maximum aggression — you're not scared of the board. Overbetting a one-pair hand into a four-straight board is exactly backwards: you only get action from the straights and two-pairs that crush you. This is a costly sizing leak.
